This course is being offered to K-6, RSP, SDC teachers, and school administrators. The course is required for teachers in the EXTENDED LEARNING program.
The Online Elementary Reading Academy, based on the science of reading, takes the best of CORE’s nationally acclaimed Teaching Reading Sourcebook and packages it into a facilitated, seven-module asynchronous, online course. The course teaches educators the five essential components of reading instruction with clear and explicit models immediately applicable to the classroom. How can we best meet the needs of today’s ELL students? How can we help limited and non-English speaking
students acquire essential reading, writing, and speaking skills for success in language acquisition across the curriculum? Kagan Structures, cooperative and communicative teaching strategies, are wonderful tools to

Thinking Maps can benefit students by: Providing a consistent thinking process, vocabulary, and visual language through
interactive engaging student activities allowing them to interact with content in
literacy and math using any curriculum or supplemental materials.
Organizing their ideas on paper or by computer, and—as a result—teach them to
read, write, problem-solve and think better.
Building equity by allowing greater individualization of literacy and math
standards for all.

In this two day workshop, teachers will familiarized with the problem-based lesson structure used in the IM curriculum, and to explore specific resources in the materials to support this implementation. Teachers will experience a lesson, investigate and reflect on content and language routines, explore various supports, understand assessment materials, and begin to use student thinking as a vehicle for productive planning. Teachers will gain experience navigating the partner website and learn how to find teacher and student materials. After this training teachers will be ready to begin using IM in their classroom.
